Are you prepared for an ice storm.... ?

So.... with all the talk of winter weather in the state tonight I thought I would do a post on being prepared......

My dad has ALWAYS taught me to try to be prepared for anything "just in case" . Better to be prepared than to be taken by surprise, so YES we always have water and food on hand and plenty of flashlights with extra batteries and oil for the lamps and wood for a fire and so on .... so I like to think I am prepared.

Here are a few things that I do when talk of bad winter weather starts around here.....

 

1. Make sure I have gas in my car.

 

2. Make sure my water supply is good. (for us AND the animals) in case pipes were to freeze or burst or such

 

3. Check wood stock, and fill the porch with wood for convience.

 

4.  Put out extra hay and shavings for animals and check all windows and such on coop

 

5.  ALWAYS make sure at least a week or 2 of food in the house

 

6.  Have oil lamps out and already filled

 

7.  Make sure cell phone and laptops are fully charged, that way if you need you can charge phone off of laptop :-)

 

8.  have a radio and extra batteries handy

 

9.  Make sure if the power is out for any extended time , more than 30 min or so, that you unplug all appliances to keep from power surg destroying them when power is restored

 

10.  have fun activities to do with the kiddos....

 

11. ENJOY YOUR FAMILY TIME :-)

 

S0, do I think we will get a winter storm after knocking near 70 for a few days...? No.... but I do feel I am prepared wether we do or not :-)

Another rainy day

Well it was another rainy day here on the homestead , which means a lazy day for the kiddos, but lots f work for momma :-) Bella sat around working on school project most of day and JJ played a little and watched some tv. he is feeling quite a bit better today. 

Started out the day with my dad coming and helping me check the electric fence and put out some hay for the muddy messy chickens lol

speaking of chickens, the girls have been really enjoying this abnormal 60 and 70 degree weather in January.... today I had 6 eggs :-)

I also took the warm weather as a chance to restock the wood on the porch .... my wood supply is getting low, guess its time to get more 

Me and my dad loaded up the dryer to take to a friend today and he took it off for me and took JJ for a ride, which I used that chance to clear alot of brush around the house and such.... have to take every chance ya get to do some yard work :-) 

Got out and about to feed the cow and such, Brick just wont stay out of the trough 

JJ was finally feeling well enough to go visit the animals this afternoon, he wasnt quite sure :-)  now to settle in and do some housework before bed. until next time..... God bless, from our homestead to yours

The Homestead under the weather....

Well the ickies have hit the homestead... Wed night JJ spiked a fever of 103.4 , so we tried to just sleep it out, he slept all day thursday but this morning was still sick so we hit the doctors office. when we got there his fever was 103.8 :-( they ran strep and flu but both came back negative, then took some blood tested it and decided its just a viral thing, so now we just wait it out :-(

so far we have spent 3 nights in the recliner :-( but his elephants bring lots of comfort. 

Some great news coming from Bella this week, report cards came home and she was 3 points away from straight A's!!! So very proud of her! She had the yuckies earlier in the week but is doing MUCH better now :-)

 

Our egg production has been up with the warmer weather round here, yeah right at 70 in Jan!!!! lol.... we are getting between 5 to 8 eggs a day right now, but its really muddy so i need to go out tmorrow and spread some straw for them. so I will try to get some outside pics tomorrow... till then God bless from our  homestead to yours!

Welcome

Well, welcome to the beginning of a new chapter. I am going to be phasing out facebook so for anyone who wants to stay in the loop on our lives and the process of our homestead, this is the place to do that . :-) I will try to post at least once a week ( if you get more, yay! ) but only promising once a week , and keep you up to date with our progress and milestones. 

We had a HUGE milestone this week..... yesterday, my aunt and uncle delievered our first cow and goat. 

everyone meet.... our cow Albus, and our goat Brick :-)

they roamed around for a little bit to get used to their new home.... I have to admit it was FUNNY seeing a cow in my front yard LOL

 

But they got settled in pretty quickly :-) then over night the rain set in :-(

so i moved their food under cover cause its supposed to rain for 7 days! 

So my uncle calls and says he got home and had a baby goat! didnt know his was pregnant and that mine may be too....so stay tuned to see if we end up with a baby ;-)

the dogs went out and made friends today too 

 

 

 I wish i had got a picture of the cow licking tallulahs face...it was so cute! Well thats about it for today other than lots of yucky noses and sore throats in the house.... so i will leave you with my favorite picture from yesterday.... God bless from our homestead to yours :-)
