Are you prepared for an ice storm.... ?

So.... with all the talk of winter weather in the state tonight I thought I would do a post on being prepared......
My dad has ALWAYS taught me to try to be prepared for anything "just in case" . Better to be prepared than to be taken by surprise, so YES we always have water and food on hand and plenty of flashlights with extra batteries and oil for the lamps and wood for a fire and so on .... so I like to think I am prepared.
Here are a few things that I do when talk of bad winter weather starts around here.....

1. Make sure I have gas in my car.

2. Make sure my water supply is good. (for us AND the animals) in case pipes were to freeze or burst or such

3. Check wood stock, and fill the porch with wood for convience.

4.  Put out extra hay and shavings for animals and check all windows and such on coop

5.  ALWAYS make sure at least a week or 2 of food in the house

6.  Have oil lamps out and already filled

7.  Make sure cell phone and laptops are fully charged, that way if you need you can charge phone off of laptop :-)

8.  have a radio and extra batteries handy

9.  Make sure if the power is out for any extended time , more than 30 min or so, that you unplug all appliances to keep from power surg destroying them when power is restored

10.  have fun activities to do with the kiddos....

11. ENJOY YOUR FAMILY TIME :-)

S0, do I think we will get a winter storm after knocking near 70 for a few days...? No.... but I do feel I am prepared wether we do or not :-)
So, what are your tips for weather preparedness? We would love to hear the, just comment below.
So....stay warm and until next time..... God bless from our homestead to yours :-)

  1. I think you covered it. Especially the ALWAYS be prepared, not wait til there's a threat. Because you just never know... :)

I had already planned to get groceries today, and found myself Krogering with a bunch of procrastinators. Frustrated that I had to be there, but felt good that we're somewhat ready.

One wise but easy thing we have done is to keep 2-Liter bottles full of water in the (would otherwise be) empty space under our bed.

Another idea, since we don't do the oil lamp thing, I collect candles when I see them cheap at the thrift store. A blogger I read collects them and stashes them away in a box. Because again, you just never know... :)

Thanks for blogging, Tiffany. Hug the kiddos from me.

  2. GREAT tips! we do the candles to lol, cause we only JUST started the oil lamps :-) too bad we have a waterbed with a drop in matt.... cant put anything under bed :-( I am doing MAJOR purging right now though, lol, with a pretty small house I want to go to just the basic stuff...time to say bye bye to some stuff I have been holding on to for a LONG time! today while going through some papers I found the last church bulletin from our last service before we moved churches... the song program from church at the park in GA the day chance died :-( and many more things that I was holding onto.... some I was able to part with others just not yet. So glad you are keeping in touch Nik, I have to say going without facebook is actually easier and better than I thought! :-)

  3. I can definitely see the up side of no facebook... people can be so frustrating. That said, I do like to be in touch with too many of the others to give it up now. And, I got the best compliment from a distant friend... she said she always enjoys what I post, and takes the time to read many of them twice. So, perhaps it's facebook as a ministry. A frustrating ministry, but it's nice to switch it up and use technology for good. :)

Purging is good, when you're ready. While we realize it's not about "things", it's hard to part with things that feel tied to those we love. Good for you, letting go of some stuff. The memories are always yours.

I feel you on the small house thing, but creativity is a good thing. I read a Mormon blog where she talks of her childhood bedside table being a case of toilet paper with a plywood top, covered with a pretty piece of fabric. She didn't realize until she was an adult what was under there, lol. :)
